Reverse Engineering & Engineering

From the existing plant via the CAD model to the new plant

With our own 3D scanner we capture your existing plant with millimetre precision and turn it into a reliable basis for planning.

As-built drawings rarely match reality. Anyone who bases modifications on old plans risks clashes, rework and extended shutdowns. L+K captures the actual condition, transfers it into CAD and plans your modification to fit exactly – so that prefabricated parts really fit during installation. Inspection scans in manufacturing ensure this too: we compare manufactured parts with the model before they leave the workshop.

Reverse engineering

Capturing the existing plant – with scanner and surface reconstruction.

For data capture we use 3D scanners from Artec. Using Geomagic Design X, we convert the scan data into clean, dimensionable CAD geometry – as a basis for re-manufacturing, replacement design and modification planning.

Designed and manufactured pipeline superimposed

Target/actual comparison: The designed pipeline and the scan of the manufactured pipeline are superimposed. This shows us before installation whether the part really fits.

Engineering

Planning new modules – in existing plants or on a greenfield site.

In engineering we plan process modules including steel and piping construction to customer specification – either for integration into an existing plant complex or as a new greenfield plant.

We work with M4 PLANT from CAD Schroer, Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD, as well as Navisworks and ReCap for coordination, clash detection and point clouds.

How we work

Six steps from the existing plant to a perfect fit.

  1. On-site survey3D laser scanning of piping, modules, steel structures and installation areas with our own scanner
  2. Point cloudRegistration and processing of the scan data into a complete digital twin
  3. CAD modelConversion into native, dimensionable 3D geometry as a basis for planning and manufacturing
  4. Design & clash detectionNew pipe routing, replacement designs and connections directly in the as-built model
  5. PrefabricationIsometrics and manufacturing drawings; parts are prefabricated to fit precisely in the workshop and checked against the CAD model by scan
  6. Installation on siteShort installation windows, because the parts fit
Making planning visible

Existing plant and design working together.

Point cloud and CAD model superimposed: this shows exactly where the new design meets the real existing plant – flange by flange, connection by connection.

The animation above shows the process on a sample plant: from laser scan via the CAD model to the replacement of existing components, separated at the flange connections and replaced with identical connection dimensions.

Typical applications
  • Process gas and oil piping in existing plants
  • Replacement designs for obsolete components
  • Extensions and modifications during ongoing operation
  • Digital documentation of old plants without current drawings
Your benefits
  • Planning certainty instead of measurement risk
  • Significantly shorter downtimes and installation times
  • Less rework on site
  • A digital plant model for future projects
